Property Tax Assessments to change in 2011
Huntersville, NC (January, 21, 2011) Mecklenburg County Commissioner Karen Bentley invited
officials from the Tax Assessors office for a public meeting Tuesday, Jan. 18th where tax
officials said they expect the total assessed value of real estate in the county to be up 6 to
8 percent when they complete their 2011 revaluation. It was noted that’s an average, and individual
taxpayers could find their valuations above or below that mark depending on the specific properties
and locations.
Property owners won’t know where they stand until valuation notices arrive the first or second week
of February, according to Mecklenburg Tax Assessor Garrett Alexander. (Commercial revaluation notices
are expected the first or second week of March)
The mandatory revaluation is the county’s first since 2003. Because property values change over time and
with the changing market, local governments must update their assessments of property values every eight
years under N.C. law. The county has put off this revaluation for the past couple of years because of
economic uncertainty and an unstable real estate market.
